Position Title: Medical Technician (Phlebotomist)
Location: VA Bedford Healthcare System, 200 Springs Road, Bedford, MA 01730
Work Schedule: Primarily 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM; schedule may vary across day shifts between 6:00 AM–6:00 PM. Weekend, holiday, and overtime work may be required.
Position Overview
The Phlebotomist will provide on-site phlebotomy and laboratory specimen processing services to beneficiaries of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at the VA Bedford Healthcare System. Services must meet or exceed nationally recognized standards, including Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. The contractor will furnish two (2) full-time equivalent Phlebotomists to support VA staffing needs and ensure continuity of patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Phlebotomy & Patient Care
- Perform patient phlebotomy across all care settings, including:
- Inpatient units
- Outpatient clinics
- Emergency Department
- STAT, ASAP, and timed blood draws
- Conduct inpatient ward rounds as assigned.
- Positively identify patients prior to sample collection and ensure proper labeling of all specimens.
Specimen Processing
- Process laboratory samples and prepare specimens for send-out testing.
- Document, identify, and resolve collection or processing issues promptly.
Compliance & Safety
- Safeguard patient information in accordance with HIPAA, VA privacy directives, and federal regulations.
- Follow all infection control, bloodborne pathogen, and laboratory safety standards.
- Maintain required clinical documentation in the VA electronic health record (EHR).
Professional Conduct & Customer Service
- Deliver patient-centered care with professionalism and respect.
- Engage in QA/QI activities, laboratory meetings, and performance improvement processes.
- Maintain excellent interpersonal communication with VA staff, supervisors, and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
Experience & Competency
- Minimum three (3) years of recent phlebotomy experience.
- Technical proficiency in venipuncture, specimen handling, and laboratory safety.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.
Work Expectations
- Contractor is responsible for providing coverage during absences, leave, or vacancies.
- Maximum of 80 hours of personal leave permitted per employee during the assignment; extended leave requires prior approval and must include coverage.
- Personnel must maintain professional appearance, hygiene, and behavior at all times.
- VA reserves the right to refuse any contractor personnel based on performance, conduct, or non-compliance.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Work may involve standing for extended periods, moving between clinical areas, and handling biological specimens.
- Must adhere to all VA safety, infection control, and hazardous materials protocols.
